Grand Rapids Area Manufacturer is seeking a Direct Hire Mechanical/Industrial Design Engineer

Position Description:

  • Ensuring that all work-related functions are completed according the Company’s Health & Safety policies and as per the MIOHSA rules and regulations or other applicable national standards and the governing values of the company and according to financial plan. Typical work week based from 40+ to 50 hours / week.
  • Review customer specifications and develop a design for quotation based on supplied information.
  • Review details with customer to ensure product meets requirements. Typical design activity based on existing product with design variations and occasional complete concept to final product design.
  • Develop Layout drawings for customer approval.
  • Develop the product construction documentation required to manufacture the product Using 3D CAD software and directing CAD personnel in the detailing of construction documentation.
  • Direct and lead team members engaged in the design and construction of equipment.
  • Responsible for growth and development of team members throughout design and manufacturing process.
  • Interact with customers to review orders for continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
  • Investigate new products, existing competitive equipment, and research opportunities to improve on current designs and methods of manufacture.
  • Ensure that the products and plans meet CWB / AWS welding standards
  • Provide input for required build schedules and ensure Engineering design deadlines are met.
  • Provide testing documentation and engage in factory acceptance testing as needed.
  • Develop manuals, technical specification, and component parts lists as required.
  • Occasional finite element analysis on structures using SOLIDWORKS® FMEA programs will be required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Industrial Design required.
  • 3+ years of experience designing equipment to be manufactured or assembled with an emphasis on heavy equipment and welding equipment.
  • Fully capable to read & design plans in digital formats. SOLIDWORKS® required.
  • Demonstrate sound decision-making ability, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills – oral, written, as well as computer (use of Microsoft office products).
  • Demonstrated current knowledge of manufacturing of equipment in most related industries, including automotive, heavy industry, machine manufacturing, industrial manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of installation procedures for mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems for builds. Occasionally climb over and around equipment being assembled, built or repaired.
  • Knowledge of work order/ cost accounting.
  • Work in normal office conditions (maybe option for partial remote) and coordinate in shop environment.
  • Occasionally travel, as required to domestic and international locations.
